You start with very little, catch and sell fish, buy better equipment, complete island quests, and take down the boss fish blocking the way home.

Solo is supported. So is an eight-person lobby.
Dazed Games expanded lobbies to eight players in Patch 1.0.4. The Steam store description still says 1–4, so the newer official patch note is the current limit.
